Plainfield is the biggest town in Hendricks County and the one with the widest spread of housing: Quaker-era homes near the old National Road, 1970s and 80s ranches on big lots, and subdivisions from the last twenty years. Each era has its own electrical habits, and we have worked on all three, along with the retail strip on US 40 and the warehouses near the airport.
Three generations of houses along the National Road
Quakers from the Carolinas settled the Plainfield area in 1823, and Levi Jessup and Elias Hadley platted the town in 1839 along the National Road, today's US 40. It became a Quaker center, home of the Western Yearly Meeting of Friends from 1858, and got its rail connection to Indianapolis on the Vandalia line in the 1880s. By the 2020 census it had grown to 34,625 people, anchored on the east by the White Lick Creek corridor and on the southeast by the Indianapolis International Airport and the logistics parks that grew up around it.
That history shows up in the wiring. The oldest homes near downtown have the same layered wiring as any Indiana town center. The 1970s and 80s ranches that make up much of the middle of town were built during the years aluminum branch wiring was common and backstabbed outlets were standard, and their original panels are now forty to fifty years old. The newer subdivisions, Hobbs Station and the neighborhoods around it, came with 200 amp services and unfinished basements, and are now adding chargers, hot tubs and finished lower levels.
What we see in Plainfield houses
Aluminum branch wiring
Common in homes built from the late 1960s into the 1970s. The risk is at the connections, and the fix is pigtailing every one with approved connectors or CO/ALR devices. We inspect first and quote the whole house.
Forty-year-old panels
Original panels in the ranches are at the age where breakers weaken and bus bars pit. Some are brands with known failure histories. A panel inspection tells you whether it is a repair or a replacement.
Backstabbed outlets letting go
A dead outlet that takes three others with it is usually a push-in connection that failed. We replace the run of devices with screw-terminal connections so it stops happening.
Detached garages and big lots
The larger lots east of town mean longer runs: feeders to detached garages, shop circuits and hot tub feeds where wire gauge and conduit depth actually matter.
New-subdivision basements
West of White Lick Creek the calls are for finished lower levels, EV chargers and dedicated circuits for the home office.
Storefronts and warehouses
US 40 retail, restaurants around Perry Crossing, and the industrial parks near the airport keep our commercial side busy with circuits, lighting and service work.

From the older neighborhoods near downtown and Main Street, across the ranches along US 40 and the county roads east of town, to the subdivisions on the west side, and the business corridors along US 40, Stafford Road and the airport-side industrial parks. Guilford Township addresses outside the town limits get the same service.
Plainfield homeowners ask
Look at the cable jacket where it enters the panel or at an exposed run in the basement: aluminum cable is usually marked AL or ALUMINUM on the sheathing, and the bare conductor is silver rather than copper colored. If you are not sure, we can tell in a few minutes at the panel and check the outlets and switches at the same time.
Yes. Retail and restaurant spaces along US 40, offices, and the warehouses and shops in the industrial parks near the airport. Build-outs, equipment circuits, lighting retrofits and after-hours service calls.
Usually. The newer Plainfield subdivisions were built with 200 amp services, which carry a Level 2 charger comfortably. The question is open breaker slots, and a subpanel or tandem breakers handle that when the panel is full.
